A planning meeting for the Coordinated Audit on SDG 5 on gender equality was held from April 9 to 13, 2018, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Participants include the Supreme Audit Institutions of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, as well as the audit entities of Spain and Bogotá, in their capacity as associate members of the OLACEFS.
The regional meeting was part of OLACEFS Commission for Citizen Participation’s activities and was supported by the INTOSAI Development Initiative (IDI), through its Auditing the Sustainable Development Goals Programme.
The aim was to support SAIs from the region in carrying out a coordinated performance audit based on the ISSAIs on preparation for the implementation of SDG 5 in its national contexts. The audit is one of the first responses of SAIs in contributing to the implementation, follow-up and assessment of SDGs, providing independent oversight of government efforts in the early implementation of the goals. It will also give SAIs a say in these issues in their countries, ensuring they are not left behind.
Over the course of the conference, issues relating to the 2030 Agenda and SDG 5 in particular were discussed, and planning matrices to guide the work of the teams of the SAIs were developed. The event also allowed the audit teams to get feedback from the mentors (senior auditors of the SAIs of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Paraguay, with the support of UNDESA), on the implementation of their work. The forum additionally provided a chance to carry out peer reviews that encouraged the exchange of experiences, allowing strengths and weaknesses to be swapped regarding the oversight that will be undertaken in the respective countries.
Ahead of this technical meeting SAI representatives had to satisfactorily pass an eLearning course – “Performance Audit in Preparation for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals”, held in 2017.
Among the agreements arrived at in the planning meeting, a schedule for product delivery and future meetings was established.
This initiative, like others carried out by OLACEFS, seeks to significantly contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development Goals in our region, and strengthen the national systems dealing with these issues.
